090505-N-9732C-xxx WASHINGTON - (May 5, 2009) - Lt. Cmdr. J. Howard Thayer was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, posthumously, for his lifesaving actions during the Korean War. On two different occasions he assisted wounded pilots in safely landing their planes. A 1954 movie, Men of the Fighting Lady, told his story. The medal was presented to his widow at a ceremony held at the Naval Support Activity Washington - Washington Navy Yard in the soon-to-be-opened Cold War Museum, in front of friends, family and invited guests.
