In February, 1886 an ornithologist identified 160 species' plumes on two walks through New York City's "Ladies' Mile" shopping district. An estimated 5,000,000 birds were killed for their feathers that year. Outlawed in 1900, plume hunting in Florida was so lucrative -- some feathers bringing more than an equivalent weight of gold -- and the Everglades so unpopulated that the Audubon Society hired its own game warden. The first, here interred in Key West, was shot by a man named Walter Smith who was defended by the Monroe County prosecutor who arraigned him on the grounds of self-defense even though Warden Bradley's gun still had all six bullets in it. Needless to say, Smith walked and the carnage resumed. Newspaper coverage of Bradley's murder led New York State to outlaw feather imports and demand slowly faded, but not before two more game wardens were killed by plume hunters.
