SmugMug > all-time keyword > german > A photo of my wife at what's left of the Wall in Vacha/Thüringen, Germany. This weekend we drove to her home town for her 25th class reunion and we stopped along the way to get some shots here. Without the Wall coming down she wouldn't have her two wonderful boys and I, a retired US Soldier, would have never met her.

I love hearing her stories about life behind the Wall. I guess it has special meaning to both of us. You see, I was a US Soldier stationed in Germany from 1984-86 and then again from 1988-96. Back on my first tour East Germany and the Soviets were a big, real threat. They were the bad guys. We trained to "defend freedom". Upon alert we had 3 hours to be 100% loaded up, trucks and tracks lined up, and ready to roll to our spot on the border.

This is such a special time for our patch work family. So much would have never been if this wall hadn't come down. After the anouncment by Schabowski my wife said they were in total disbelief. Her and her friends just HAD to get to the nearest border to see if it was all true. They loaded into a Trabant and crossed. Not to escape, just to see, and for once be allowed to move freely.

I myself remember being over a friends house here in Germany and hearing him say "Get in here and check this out!" On the news were live pictures of both East and West Germans taking hammers to the wall.

What an amazing time in in history. And so many of us were witness to it.

Thank you to all the politicians involved in this. You made our family possible.

Pease leave a comment if the fall of the Wall has a special meaning to you. Share your story.
