Soldiers from the Fifth Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery built an obelisk that stands 20 feet high and placed 200-pound artillery shells on its apex and at its corners. The simple inscription fastened to the monument reads, "In memory of the patriots who fell." The National Park Service now maintains this monument.
