Authorized and financed by the Massachusetts Legislature, the granite monument includes a sculpted replica of a Union soldier's backpack and bugle. Commanded by Colonel Arthur Devereaux, the 19th Massachusetts counterattacked Confederate troops who had broken the Federal lines during Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. In doing so, the regiment lost nine men killed and 61 wounded; another seven men were listed as missing in action. The monument is now maintained by the National Park Service.
