So I pulled it out of my pocket and began calling on a fawn distress call. Almost immediately the bear came out of the alders to investigate. With one shot from my Winchester .375, the bear tumbled down an embankment and out of sight. Mike and I excitedly climbed up off the beach with Sam following, Mike fired a couple of insurance shot into the bear and the celebration began!
SmugMug > keywords > kodiak > Less than an hour after I shot my best buck and 2-1/2 hours before Island Air was scheduled to come pick us up to begin our journey home, I shot my first Kodiak Bear! We were in the boat scanning the hillsides and shoreline for a bear as we headed back up Uyak Bay to the lodge when Mike Carlson saw this bear walking on the beach! Before we could get there the bear walked up hill and disappeared into the alders. We all fell silent.
